Weekend Reading & a Few Short Sentences

Cavendish, Summer 2012.

For your weekend reading: (Be prepared. They both hit me straight in the heart.)

// on hospitality, by creating space in your life for others.
// on over-committing because you don't want to become irrelevant.

It's been an emotionally charged month. We said good-bye to a beloved grandmother. We spent a lot of time with family. I'm starting a new job on Monday. All the emotions, all over the place.

Busy, full life. I am thankful for this season but also look forward to quieter times. Perhaps they are ahead? I'm digging my heels in for time to slow down.

I may crave adventure but I dislike change. Can you relate?

A summer of friendships

This summer has been pretty great. Getting married and settling into our new home aside, our schedule has been jam packed with spending time with friends. You'll hear no complaints from me! Adding in a quick trip to Ontario this past weekend, we really have been blessed to spend so much time catching up and hanging out.

We said a sad goodbye to our dear friends Emil and Karisa, who have started their own adventure in California as first year teachers! They were able to spend half the summer on PEI and were instrumental in the crunch time before our wedding. They've started their own blog, which you can follow here!

Just before Shayne & I left for our whirlwind trip to Ontario, Bethany and Bridget came back! They are both teachers at our local Christian school and had gone home for the summer to visit family. We are so glad to have them back!!

I love this picture of Kar, Vern and I in our Sunday best. :) We had a sleepover on Saturday night, sort of like old times!

At the end of our trip we were able to squeeze in a quick visit with Brian and Martine - friends who got married in Holland last year (you can read more about the wedding & our trip.) Ach, it was so good to spend even just one night with them again. Our busy schedules don't always allow for long phone calls but we can catch up pretty quickly when Martine and I get to talking!!

So, our busy summer full of friendships is drawing to a close. We had a great time and made a lot of precious memories! Campfires, road trips, sleepovers, and late nights. That's the stuff summers are made of around here!

Branding for Sarah by the Sea Shop

The day has come. The logo has been created, tested by marketing professionals, stared at for hours, tweaked and tweaked again, and I'm finally taking a deep breath and jumping in!

Throughout this process, I spent a long time researching logo and branding tips. I wanted my new logo to incorporate my love of navy and grey, as well as a nod to my Island life.

When it came down to design time, I knew what I wanted but couldn't explain it to my designer friend accurately enough. After designing a mock-up for her to look at it, she turned around and told me if I could do a mock-up, then I could probably handle the rest on my own as well. She was right - and her encouragement gave me the confidence to plunge head first into properly crafting this logo of mine. Thanks to a ton of tutorials (picture me googling every five minutes "how to _____ in Adobe Illustrator")!

So - what do you think?

Settling in.

Sipping sweet strawberry wine, overlooking Rear Big Hill in Baddeck NS, on our honeymoon.

Hey guys! We are back from our honeymoon! Actually we've been back for almost a week. It's been a busy one and it doesn't help that I've been dragging through it! But, our home is finally starting to look like we live there. We've got pockets of beautiful spaces, like half our bedroom, and part of our living room, and one small space on our kitchen counter. Little by little though, we're making progress!

We had a great trip to Cape Breton the week after our wedding. Our cabin in the woods had a beautiful view (you can see a little from the above picture.) We relaxed, toured around, and enjoyed our first week of marriage - but were both ready to get home and settle into real life! I hope to share some pictures when we have internet hooked up at our place.

For now, I'll leave you with the one sneak peek from our wedding day. Our photographer, Simon Reid, was great to work with and we are excited to see the rest of the images!!

home update

Just popping in for a quick minute to talk home renos. It's been a flurry of work, and we're into small projects that make a big impact right now. A little of what we've accomplished in the last two weeks:

  • finished laying flooring on the main level (except the music room & bathroom - we're not doing these two rooms right now)
  • installed trim in the living room, kitchen, working on the dining room
  • filled in and painted the seams of the living room trim
  • purchased and installed wall lights in the bedroom
  • ordered transition strips for between rooms (waiting for these to re-install the doors!)
  • ordered blinds (they should be in a few days before the wedding)
  • scrubbed the bedroom windows (turns out the handles aren't rusty, that was just a ton of grime!)
  • cleaned the main floor bathroom
  • painted the screen door and patio door frames in the living room
  • purchased and installed a bathroom track light
  • painted the hall closets and shelves
  • moved most of my worldly possessions into the basement, waiting for the main level to be cleaned so I can unpack!
With only a few days left until the wedding, we are in a mad dash to complete projects - and try not to start any new ones ;) - so we can move in!

nine. more. days.

In nine days, we'll be wed! Man and wife. I'm gonna be a wife, y'all!

He and I will no doubt have a lot to learn about each other and about marriage but that's a journey we're willing to make together.

There aren't enough words for how amazing this man is.
In short, I'll say this. My Shayne is wonderful and I praise the Lord for him!

Can. Not. WAIT. to be his Mrs!

Life lately

Life lately: busy! In the last four weeks, we've been working a lot and sleeping only a little.

On the home front:
  • The wallpaper on our main level now lives in the garbage pile with all the old carpet. Hooray!
  • The walls have been patched and sanded.
  • The closet in our master bedroom has been opened way up, framed in, drywalled, mudded, and sanded.
  • Shayne mapped out a big change to the electrical in our bedroom, which involved making two switched plugs constant, installing boxes for wall sconces above our bed (with a dimming light switch!), wiring up the closet so that a light comes on when you open the doors, and adding ceiling lights - which were not popular in the 1970s, apparently.
  • He also installed ceiling lights in our living room. These weren't nearly as much work as in the bedroom as he had already figured out what to do & how to do it by that point.
  • This week, we're planning to clean, seal, prime, and paint our bedroom!

On the wedding front:
  • We're down to less than 90 days til I'm his Mrs.! :)
  • We made and mailed our wedding invitations! I have a handful that still need to be delivered, but all those requiring postage were mailed before Canada Post hiked the rates on March 31st. We've even received several RSVPs already.
  • I picked up my dress from the bridal shop. There are a few alterations to be done, but it fits so well and I'm very excited.
  • I signed the contract for the reception hall.
  • I ordered a photo guest book for our ceremony & reception from Picaboo and it turned out really cute!
  • I have started having stressed out wedding nightmares! One was a dress disaster, and another had to do with the wedding ceremony.
  • We booked our honeymoon!!!

On the life front:
  • I've hardly had two minutes to think about doing anything crafty so there's nothing to report there.
  • I did manage to catch up on my laundry for about a day.
  • My wisdom teeth came out on Friday, and I've had a relatively easy recovery, for which I am thankful!
  • Shayne & I have a date scheduled for this weekend. We're celebrating 2 years together!

PS: like the face lift?

our engagement photos

A few weeks ago we met with our wedding photographer for an engagement session. I mentioned it in my February review post, but didn't share too much more than that, because I've been saving the photos for today.

Simon Reid is great to work with! I honestly recommend him if you're local. He gave direction to two sleepy-headed lovebirds and made us look like we knew what we were doing! Many thanks to Uncle Jim & Aunt Freda of Terpstra Sleigh Rides, who graciously helped us with our sleigh ride engagement shoot.

Alright. Here they are! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

We're looking forward to working with Simon on our wedding day...which is quickly coming closer!! Eeep!! :D

hello, home ownership!

Yes, you read that right! We're home owners! Our closing date is TODAY! We get the keys; hip hip hooray!!

We spotted the house a few months ago, but finally got out to see it mid-January. By the next week we had been approved for a mortgage and made an offer, which after one counter, was accepted! I've been waiting to blog about it ever since. If you follow me on Pinterest you may have been able to guess what I've been dreaming about - house renovations!!

Our home is about 35 years old, and almost everything, if not absolutely everything...is original. Hello blank canvas!! The house is in great shape, as is the interior, so when we've replaced the sun-stained carpet with new flooring and re-painted the main floor, it will be quite enjoyable to live in.

Our plan is to work on updating the house before the wedding, and we'll both move in when we're married. This means February was a big wedding planning month, so that March & April can be house months, before planting season calls Shayne away from our project.

So, wow, home ownership. How neat is that?! Eeeep! Home owners! Weeee!

(PS. Excuse the awful cell phone quality picture and the mid-winter dirty snow!)

My churchmouse yarns crocheted baby blanket

Last summer, during a quiet week, my fingers began to itch for something to do. I picked up a ball of yarn and started working up this baby blanket. I took it along to the office and, on my lunch hours, a few rows at a time, it took shape!!

The pattern I used is from Churchmouse Yarns. I stumbled onto their site, who knows how...that's what the internet does to me. You can purchase the pattern for yourself here! So simple to work up, and although the pattern gives a 5 or 7 colour option...I quite like my 2 colour variation! I'm imagining so many more variations...so much fun!

Now that it's finished, I've stored it for some special baby, yet to be determined. Not mine, that's for sure...but perhaps all those weddings I attended in 2013 will give me a reason to gift this blanket in the next couple of years?? ;)

Consider this an item crossed off my Big List!

sparrow joy shop

My blogging friend Jen opened a shop recently. Some of you may know her in real life (I don't have that privilege!) but I've gotten to know her through the interwebs over the last little while, and when she announced the opening of her Etsy shop, Sparrow Joy, I was so excited! You see, Jen has impeccable design taste. I've long enjoyed her blog header design, and having seen a few samples of her other design work...well, I knew that Sparrow Joy would be a success!

Jen held a giveaway in December for a free custom designed print, and yours truly was selected as the winner!! I chose a few lines from a friend's favourite song, and after a bit of discussion back and forth on colour, (we wanted it to match the living room of my friend's house!) Jen sent the finished product over!

(click the image to go to the listing)

Jen was fun to work with, and so easy going about the whole process! I sent her a few badly coloured cell phone pictures to work from, and she kindly sent me a few different options before I made my final choice.

Check out Jen's Etsy shop, Sparrow Joy, for more great designs!
